Narrative
ERIE CO., PA – A 24-year-old man died, and five people went to the hospital following a multi-vehicle wrong-way collision along a highway in southeast Erie County.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. last Sunday on PA-97 between Waterford and Union City.
The investigation thus far indicates that the 26-year-old driver of a southbound SUV lost control of his vehicle due to wet road conditions, veered into the northbound lane, and collided head-on with two other SUVs.
One of the northbound drivers died at the scene of the accident. Police identified him as Ethan Johnson from Titusville.
A female passenger in Johnson’s SUV went to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
The female driver and two passengers in the other northbound SUV, including a teen girl, also sustained injuries in the crash. Medics transported them to UPMC Hamot.
The wrong-way driver, identified as 26-year-old Michael Dingle, also sustained unknown injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
